SEOUL, April 11 (Korea Bizwire) – POSCO, the world’s fifth-largest steelmaker by output, will partner in the implementation of U.N. Sustainable Development Goals, a local nongovernmental organization (NGO) said Wednesday.
The South Korean steel company has been working on a project since 2014 to build high-quality houses using its own steel house method and to provide sustainable life for residents in the cities where POSCO operates.
POSCO has built a total of 104 houses in Vietnam and is planning to expand its project into various regions and countries. The POSCO Steel Village project has also constructed buildings, schools and bridges, according to the Korean Association for Supporting the Sustainable Development Goals for the U.N., a local NGO.
The association said it hopes a crucial model will be set for the Sustainable Development Goals by promoting and supporting influential private projects such as POSCO Steel Village along with the United Nations and international society. This view was submitted to the 51st session of the U.N. Commission on Population and Development on Jan. 4.
Separately, Partnerships for the Sustainable Development Goals online platform, a registry of partnerships working to implement the U.N.’s goals, said on its website that POSCO is endeavoring to spread its sustainable residence model all over the world to build steel houses in South Korea, steel villages in Indonesia and a steel dome in Thailand.
