SEOUL, Apr. 26 (Korea Bizwire) — The South Korean government will invest nearly 19 billion won to develop augmented reality platforms over the next three years.

The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism announced plans for a number of major technology research projects worth 18.7 billion won on Monday, including AR platform development, support for blockchain-based content, 3D character design for video games and animations, and multidimensional video filming technology and platforms.

The four main development projects will take place over the next three years, with the culture ministry hoping to create a sophisticated technological environment for South Korean cultural content makers.

As part of efforts to boost AR platform development and engage viewers in AR content, the culture ministry will create a large-scale virtual cultural venue using cloud computing and provide a wide range of content services.

The ministry is also poised to revamp the blockchain industry, with plans to develop a platform where the rights of content creators, consumers, developers and providers are protected during the distribution process by encouraging direct transactions between industry players.

As part of the four major projects unveiled this week, the culture ministry will begin international standard Application Programming Interface research projects into both 2D and 3D computer-automated character design based on artificial intelligence.

The government’s goal is to create a new business model for the performing arts industry by incorporating some of the latest technology, including artificial intelligence, robots, and sensors into performance production.

Small and medium-sized content creators are expected to work with government-backed research institutes over the next few years to achieve the goals, with the help of companies like LG and Lotte and municipal governments including the city of Gimhae.
