SEOUL, Sept. 14 (Korea Bizwire) – The Seoul Metropolitan Government plans to introduce so-called ‘smart pole’ street lighting, which refers to an intelligent lighting system combining the functions of traffic lights, street lamps, CCTV and security lights.
The smart poles can also be used for Wi-Fi service, CCTV and recharging electric bicycles through the application of a variety of information and communication technologies including S-DoT (Smart Seoul Data of Things).
S-DoT are sensors that are designed to collect 10 different types of information, including the level fine dust, noise, light, temperature, humidity and ultraviolet rays.
Seoul’s city government announced on Sunday that it will install and run a total of fifteen smart poles from next month.
Under this plan, a total of 10 basic smart pole models will be developed, each with different functions dependent on the characteristics of installation location. On a trial basis, they will be installed first on the road that runs along the Cheonggye Stream.
The government said it will positively review the idea of converting the soon-to-be-replaced roadside facilities into smart poles.
At present, there are about 240,000 pole-type roadside facilities in Seoul, of which 3,500 to 3,700 units are replaced on a yearly basis.
The metropolitan government expects the introduction of smart poles to contribute to saving the installation cost of various roadside facilities, as well as improving the urban landscape.
