SEOUL, Oct. 19 (Korea Bizwire)Late night shopping at a local convenience store will now be possible without the help of staff – and you can leave your wallet at home, too.

South Korean credit card company Shinhan Card Co., in tandem with BGF Retail Co., the operator of convenience store chain CU, recently introduced a payment system for convenience stores based on facial recognition technology.

The system uses the Shinhan Face Pay system to allow customers into the store, verify ID, and automatically pay for the items they select.

Users are required to register credit card and facial recognition data at Shinhan Bank or at a Face Pay kiosk available at CU Hybrid stores.

Once registration is complete, users can access the system simply by scanning their faces on the device located at the store entrance. Items can be purchased by placing them on a self-checkout counter and re-scanning the face.
