SEOUL, June 23 (Korea Bizwire) — The government has earmarked 27.4 billion won (US$24.1 million) to establish a smart management system for port infrastructure, aimed at improving the efficiency in operation and management of such facilities.
The Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries plans to measure the state of port facilities on a real time basis by using Internet of Things (IoT) technologies such as smart sensors through the ‘ICT-based smart disaster response technology development project for port infrastructure.’
By using the smart management system, the ministry will measure and predict the degree of obsolescence and residual life of port infrastructure as part of efforts to carry out timely repair and maintenance work.
The ministry expects that the smart management system will contribute to making preemptive responses to disasters like typhoons.
Even when repairing damages, the system would help ensure safe construction by using smart sensors and unmanned robots.
The ministry plans to commercialize the technology from 2026.
To this end, it held a public competition in April and selected the Korea Institute of Ocean Science and Technology and the Advanced Institute of Convergence Technology as the main research institutions for the project.
