DAEJEON, Oct. 6 (Korea Bizwire) — The Korea Astronomy and Space Science Institute (KASI) said Wednesday that it will launch a new web-based service to enable users to check their exposure to space radiation during air travel.
When users input the date of travel, arrival and departure airports and cities on the KASI’s prediction model KREAM website, it calculates the estimated amount of exposure to cosmic radiation.
It’s also possible to check the amount of exposure for air travel in the past.
The website will first provide information on the routes operated by Korean Air, and then expand the scope of service to the routes operated by other airlines on a gradual basis.
CARI-6M, which is used currently by most domestic airlines, is a model reflecting only galaxy space radiation that shows almost no change throughout the year, without considering solar cosmic rays.
KREAM, which was developed in 2016 jointly by KASI and the National Meteorological Satellite Center, calculates the amount of exposure by considering both galaxy space radiation and solar space radiation.
“During the period from 2017 to last year, the average annual radiation exposure of flight attendants was two to seven times higher than that of other radiation-related workers at hospitals and nuclear plants,” said Hwang Jung-ah, a senior researcher at the KASI.
