SEOUL, Nov. 2 (Korea Bizwire) — The Korean Medical Association on Tuesday released a statement asking journalists to exercise caution when posting articles about the Itaewon crowd crush in the press or on social media.
The statement said secondary damages are being generated from uncensored, provocative articles and press, and that excessive media coverage should be avoided.
The association said that the victims and their family members, friends and witnesses are struggling with depression, regret, sleeping disorders and other serious traumatic symptoms following the tragedy in Itaewon.
Simple exposure to video footage and photos of the scene is enough to cause and exacerbate trauma, it added.
The association is asking journalists to refrain from excessive contact or coverage that may recall or exacerbate the pain, uncovering personal information including the list of consultations and medical treatment and reporting on cases that may cause any kind of bias against the victims and the survivors.
