SEOUL, Feb. 23 (Korea Bizwire) — Incheon International Airport will take a leap forward to become an eco-friendly airport through the construction of a large liquefied hydrogen charging station.
SK Plug Hyverse on Wednesday signed a business agreement for the establishment of eco-friendly airport infrastructure with the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, the Incheon metropolitan government, the Incheon International Airport Corp., and the Korea Gas Technology Corp. as part of efforts to promote the distribution of hydrogen mobility services.
SK Plug Hyverse is a joint venture between SK E&S Co., the energy unit of South Korean conglomerate SK Group, and U.S. fuel cell maker Plug Power Inc.
Under the terms of the agreement, about 13 billion won (US$9.99 million) will be spent to establish a liquefied hydrogen charging station in the bus parking lot of the Terminal 2 of Incheon airport by 2024.
The signatories will also cooperate to develop the airport into a hydrogen traffic complex using existing facilities, including charging stations and car repair, wash and parking spaces.
SK Plug Hyverse will be responsible for ensuring a stable supply of liquefied hydrogen, operating charging stations and contributing to cultivating an eco-friendly airport.
The airport has high demand for long-distance buses, including airport buses and commuting buses, while a variety of other vehicles, including cargo trucks and forklifts, are operated around the clock.
Accordingly, the company said that the shift towards hydrogen mobility would have a strong carbon-reducing effect.
