SEOUL, Korea, Sept 22 (Korea Bizwire) – Korea’s office workers said they have on average two hours of time a day for themselves before or after work. Still the number of those who use the spare time productively for their personal development is limited, with only four out of ten respondents, a survey said. According to a research unit within JobKorea, a job portal based on a recent questionnaire on 1,517 men and women office workers, the average spare time the workers have at their disposal was 1 hour and 47 minutes.
The definition of spare time, however, varied widely, with 49.7 percent of respondents saying the time going to work and coming back home and 35.3 percent regarding the time right after lunch break. Regardless of what their idea of spare time is, only 43.3 percent of the respondents said they are doing something productive during that time.
Of those who said they use the spare time for self-development, 65.0 percent said they do exercise while 64.1 percent replied they study for professional development. Other answers included studying for certificates (53.1%) and honing language skills (53.0%).
By age group, the percentage of those who are in their 40s and 50s who said they use daily spare time for personal development was much higher, 51.5 percent and 58.3 percent, respectively, than those in their 20s (16.5%) and 30s (29.5%), which shows vividly that older workers are worried about their livelihood after retirement and start early to plan for it.
