SEOUL, March 14 (Korea Bizwire) — Hanwha Systems Co., the defense and ICT unit of South Korean conglomerate Hanwha Group, said Monday it successfully demonstrated an anti-drone system designed to detect and track illegal drones and to disable them using physical nets.
During the period from March 2-8, the company tested its anti-drone system designed to neutralize small unmanned aerial systems at the Hwaseong drone test-flying site and at the training facility of the Army Infantry School in Jangseong, South Jeolla Province.
This test made us of Hanwha Systems’ thermal observation device and U.S.-based Fortem Technologies Inc.’s drone defense system. Hanwha Aerospace made an equity investment in Fortem Technologies last month.
During this test, the company said that it succeeded in detecting fixed-wing unmanned aircraft systems at a distance of 3 kilometers from the test site, as well as capturing unmanned aircraft at altitudes of 300-800 meters.
The drone mobilized to capture a threatening drone with a 2-meter wingspan flew at speeds of up to 90 kilometers per hour and recorded a capture rate of more than 90 percent through dozens of demonstrations.
The anti-drone system using physical nets has the advantage of avoiding collateral damage from drone debris that can come from in-air destruction.
