SEOUL, Sept. 19 (Korea Bizwire) – In a recent evaluation of the world’s best cancer hospitals, three South Korean medical institutions have secured positions within the top 10, marking a significant achievement for the country’s healthcare system.

According to Newsweek’s “World’s Best Specialized Hospitals” rankings released on September 18, Samsung Medical Center, Asan Medical Center, and Seoul National University Hospital claimed the 3rd, 5th, and 8th spots respectively in the oncology category.

The strong performance of South Korean hospitals extended beyond the top 10, with a total of seven institutions placing in the top 100. Severance Hospital ranked 23rd, Eunpyeong St. Mary’s Hospital 37th, the National Cancer Center 40th, and Seoul National University Bundang Hospital 57th.

American institutions maintained their dominance at the very top, with MD Anderson Cancer Center and Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center securing the first and second positions. France’s Gustave Roussy Cancer Center rounded out the top five at fourth place.

Samsung Medical Center highlighted the significance of its achievement, noting that, considering the top two hospitals are specialized cancer treatment centers, this ranking effectively places it as the world’s top general hospital for cancer care.

The hospital also emphasized that this result surpasses many established European medical institutions and maintains its position as Asia’s top cancer treatment facility for the third consecutive year.

The success of Samsung Medical Center was not limited to oncology. The hospital also ranked within the top 100 in gastroenterology (6th), urology (9th), endocrinology (14th), neurology (16th), pulmonology (23rd), orthopedics (39th), and cardiology (64th).

Additionally, in Newsweek’s “World’s Best Smart Hospitals” ranking, Samsung Medical Center climbed seven places to 18th, marking its fourth consecutive year as South Korea’s top smart hospital.

Asan Medical Center also demonstrated strength across multiple specialties, placing in the top 10 for endocrinology (3rd), gastroenterology (4th), urology (5th), and neurology (8th), in addition to its 5th place ranking in oncology. The hospital emphasized that it is one of only five institutions worldwide to have four departments ranked in the global top five.

Seoul National University Hospital showcased its comprehensive excellence by ranking in the top 100 across ten specialties, including its 8th place in oncology and notably high rankings in urology (4th), endocrinology (5th), and pediatrics (10th).

Newsweek’s rankings were compiled in collaboration with Statista, a German global marketing research firm. The evaluation process incorporated recommendations from tens of thousands of medical professionals, accreditation data, and patient treatment outcomes across 12 clinical fields.
