SEOUL, Oct. 1 (Korea Bizwire) – In an innovative approach to environmental conservation, DL E&C, a major South Korean construction company, has introduced urban beekeeping at one of its construction sites, the company announced on September 30.

This marks the first instance of a domestic construction firm establishing an urban apiary to promote biodiversity.

The pilot project, launched in May at a construction site in the Seoul metropolitan area, has yielded impressive results. After four months of careful management, the company harvested approximately 11 kilograms of natural honey in early September.

“We’ve distributed the honey to our on-site workers as a health supplement in the form of honey water,” a company spokesperson said.

To encourage environmental awareness among its staff, DL E&C created a queen bee character named Bongsooni, which has been prominently displayed around the construction site.

The company views this initiative as part of its broader commitment to Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles. DL E&C is also engaged in other environmentally conscious efforts, including a carbon footprint reduction campaign that implements guidelines for reducing carbon emissions in daily life.

Another notable initiative aims to eliminate approximately 620,000 disposable items annually through a zero paper cup drive.

Looking ahead, DL E&C has set an ambitious goal to convert its entire corporate fleet to electric vehicles by 2030.

The urban beekeeping project comes at a crucial time when bee populations worldwide are facing rapid decline, threatening global ecosystems and food security. Bees play a vital role in pollination, supporting both wild plant species and agricultural crops.

“We are actively considering expanding the urban beekeeping initiative to other construction sites,” the company stated, signaling a potential shift in how the construction industry approaches environmental stewardship.
