SEOUL, Mar. 4 (Korea Bizwire) — On March 3, a vendors’ union in Chengju’s food district dedicated to grilled pork belly restaurants held a free tasting party for 500 people to celebrate Samgyeopsal (pork belly meat) Day, a fairly new observance in Korea.
Samgyeopsal, which is one of Koreans’ favorite dinner choices for late night gatherings, translates into three layered meat, which reasons with the three visible layers of fat and protein on pork belly meat. Due to this stress on ‘three-ness,’ the third day of the third month somehow became a special day to eat out at grilled pork belly restaurants. Vendors at Seomun Market saw this as a promotional opportunity and they took it, preparing grills and enough free meat to feed 500 people.
