SEOUL, Dec. 1 (Korea Bizwire) — Samsung Heavy Industries Co., a major shipbuilder in South Korea, said Monday it has opened a remote operation center at Taiwanese shipping conglomerate Evergreen Group’s headquarters in Taipei.

The Samsung Remote Operation Center (SROC) serves as a land-based control tower that monitors vessel information and equipment status in real time, supporting more efficient equipment inspections and maintenance, according to Samsung Heavy.

Evergreen plans to increase the number of vessels connected to the SROC, the company added.

Samsung Heavy said the SROC marks the first such center established through shipbuilding–shipper collaboration, representing the outcome of a long-standing partnership between the two companies.

The shipbuilder has tested its remote monitoring technology this year by equipping Evergreen’s container ships with autonomous navigation systems on the 10,000-kilometer route between Oakland, California, and Kaohsiung, Taiwan.

The two companies also agreed to expand the development of remote inspection technology and prepare for an era of remotely operated autonomous vessels, Samsung Heavy said.

“The SROC will play a major role in supporting the safe operation of ships and enabling emergency response in the digital transformation of vessels,” said Choi Jong-woong, head of the autonomous navigation center at Samsung Heavy. “We expect the Korean shipbuilding industry to lead autonomous navigation technology and help establish global standards.”
