SEOUL, Jan. 26 (Korea Bizwire) – Hyundai Motor Group Executive Chair Euisun Chung will join a South Korean government-led delegation to support Seoul’s defense cooperation with Canada, including Ottawa’s submarine acquisition project, industry and government sources said Monday.
Chung is scheduled to depart for Canada in connection with the mission, according to the sources.
The delegation, led by presidential chief of staff Kang Hoon-sik and Industry Minister Kim Jung-kwan, is heading to Canada to back South Korea’s bid for the Canadian Patrol Submarine Project.
The government has reportedly asked several companies, including Hyundai Motor Group and Hanwha Group, to join the mission, with Chung and Hanwha Group Vice Chairman Kim Dong-kwan having accepted the request.
“As Hyundai Motor Group has a diverse business portfolio, Chung is expected to explore potential business cooperation opportunities in Canada within the delegation,” a government official said.
Canada is currently pushing for the project, under which the country plans to acquire eight to 12 submarines with a total budget of up to 60 trillion won (US$43.7 billion). A consortium of Hanwha Ocean Co. and HD Hyundai Heavy Industries Co. has been shortlisted as a final contender, along with Germany-based ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems.
The Canadian government has reportedly demanded that the bidders build local infrastructure for submarine repair and maintenance, as well as car manufacturing facilities on Canadian soil.
