INCHEON, July 7 (Korea Bizwire) – A number of high schools in Korea are offering specialized courses, moving away from their usual bisected ‘liberal arts vs. natural sciences’ programs.
Incheon’s Bugae Girls’ High School will start offering cognitive engineering-related subjects to some 90 students, beginning next year. Apart from foundation courses such as Korean, English, and Mathematics, students will have the opportunity to learn psychology, logic, linguistics, hydraulics (algorithms), anthropology, computer science, and information and communication technology.
Daegun High School, another school in Incheon, will offer classes including programming, robot manufacturing and mobile programming as part of its curriculum, starting in 2017. Students will also be given the opportunity to visit robotics and IT-related businesses and institutions, and to partake in a robot camp and student thesis contest.
The two high schools were recently designated by the Ministry of Education as ‘Curriculum-priority Schools’.

“We’re planning to operate a curriculum that is well-suited for our future society, that is the AI-based society,” said Bae Gyeong-ja, the principal of Bugae Girls’ High School. “The subjects these students will be studying will prove highly advantageous when applying to various university programs, and will prepare students for promising jobs in the future.”
