SEOUL, Sept. 13 (Korea Bizwire) – The Korean Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI) shared Monday technology highlighted at the IFA 2016 (September 2 to September 7), which, according to the institute, was met with acclaim.

The IFA, or Internationale Funkausstellung Berlin, is one of the world’s leading trade shows for consumer electronics alongside CES (Consumer Electronics Show) and the MWC (Mobile World Congress). This year’s IFA featured some 1,800 businesses from 50 countries around the world, and 240,000 industry officials and developers.

During the show, the ETRI exhibited technology related to augmented reality, broadcasting services, operating systems, and cloud computing – and consulted some 40 overseas businesses for potential technology transfer.

The most anticipated was its AR technology.

The institute presented “Smart Space Technology”, a fusion of AR and remote control technologies, where users wear a Head Mounted Display (HMD) to add a virtual space to physical space for a three-dimensional interaction.

For instance, users could make a home appliance like a rice cooker appear in their office space and operate it from there.

The technology can also summon real individuals, said ETRI, and is expected to allow for a wide variety of future services, such as AR-based education services, bi-directional virtual schooling, remote conferences, and smart home services.

The institute’s “Smart Broadcasting Technology” spotlighted its broadcasting service. The technology has the capacity to automatically produce metadata for TV series or film, such as title, runtime, production company, synopsis, characters, and places, providing viewers with a more in-depth experience with television content.

Furthermore, ETRI’s OS technology allows for the simultaneous operation of two different operating systems, to be applied to drones and industrial robots, while its “Cloud Desktop System” enables users to bring up a PC environment saved on a virtual server using various devices (i.e. smartphones) unrestrained by time and space.

“We did our best to promote our latest ICT technologies to overseas businesses during IFA 2016,” said Lee Soon-seok, Director of ETRI’s Communications Strategy. “Through diverse global marketing, we’ll further promote ETRI’s technological excellence, and spearhead the global entrance and commercialization of our technology.”
