GWANGJU, Sept. 12 (Korea Bizwire) – A man who sued his video game opponent for trash talk that reportedly left him depressed and stressed may not have won the battle, but he has at least partially won the war.
On September 11, a Gwangju district court partly ruled in favor of the plaintiff who was demanding compensation.
The case stems from a round of online video games that a group of seven including the plaintiff and the defendant played in April of last year.
The defendant allegedly berated the plaintiff for being a poor player, using profanity the plaintiff deemed excessive and harsh.
The plaintiff reportedly “received psychiatric treatment for feeling deeply offended, stressed and depressed after the defendant had insulted him”.
The court ordered a compensation payment of 100,000 won from the defendant and explained that “the defendant had insulted the plaintiff using expressions capable of lowering the plaintiff’s social reputation through the text box that was open to the defendant and the rest of the team.”
However, the court denied the plaintiff’s request for medical care compensation by stating that “it does not seem as though the defendant’s actions would be enough to cause an illness.”
