SEOUL, May 31 (Korea Bizwire) – Seoul’s efforts to reduce energy consumption have come to fruition, as the city’s efficient energy use policy saw the energy equivalent of one and a half nuclear power plants saved in recent years.
Between 2012, when the Seoul Metropolitan Government first launched its energy saving project, and June 2014, nearly 2 million tonnes of oil equivalent (toe) were saved. Since then, a further 1.62 million toe were saved as of last year, by increasing the city’s reliance on renewable power sources such as solar energy, and raising energy efficiency.
The tonne of oil equivalent (toe) is a unit of energy based on the amount of energy produced by burning one tonne of crude oil, which can be used to express all types of energy in crude oil terms.
Marking its fifth year, the Seoul government is set to hold the Seoul International Energy Conference 2017 starting today.
“As the newly elected government was sworn into office this year, a reappraisal of nuclear power plants and promotion of renewable energy have been emphasized,” an official at the Seoul Metropolitan Government said.
“Impressive results from Seoul’s long term energy project, which you could say is on par with successful energy policy in other countries, will be announced,” the official added.
Seoul plans to reduce a further 4 million toe and 10 million tons of CO2 by 2020.

Please provide some facts which are traceable. For example, one nuclear plant generates approximately 1000 megawatts each hour, or approximately 8 million megawatt hours each year. a typical family of four in Seoul uses approximately 200 kilowatt hours each month, or about 2,500 kilowatt hours each year. Dividing 8 million megawatt hours by 2,500 kilowatt hours (or 2.5 megawatt hours) gives us over 3 million families, or 12 million people – and this happens to be greater than the population of Seoul. And that is just ONE nuclear plant. So the statistics being fed by the Seoul government are at best in error, or worse, designed to mislead.
