SEOUL, Dec. 15 (Korea Bizwire) — A total of 214 sets of remains of soldiers killed during the 1950-53 Korean War have been excavated from former battle sites this year, the defense ministry said Friday.
About 11,000 soldiers were mobilized from March 27 to Nov. 10 to excavate the remains at 35 former battle sites, the ministry’s Agency for KIA Recovery and Identification said.
The agency said it collected genetic samples from over 11,000 bereaved family members and has identified 22 fallen soldiers.
South Korea has so far identified the remains of 225 service members killed in the conflict since it launched the excavation project in 2000.
