SEOUL, Feb. 27 (Korea Bizwire) — A top South Korean defense official used an international expo on advanced arms systems in the Middle East this week as an opportunity to explore ways to deepen overseas military partnerships, the authorities here said Tuesday.
Vice Defense Minister Suh Choo-suk attended the third Unmanned Systems Exhibition & Conference (UMEX) in Abu Dhabi, the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
He met with the UAE’s Minister of State for Defense Affairs Mohammed bin Ahmed Al Bowardi and other senior defense officials on the margins of the event.
In talks with the minister, Suh expressed the UAE’s efforts to develop UMEX as a world-class expo and discussed how to further strengthen military and defense industry cooperation between the two countries, according to his ministry.
South Korea maintains the 140-strong Akh special forces unit in the UAE, a symbol of the close bilateral military partnership.
Suh also had a series of meetings with his Kazakh counterpart and Saudi Arabia’s Air Force chief, during which they reaffirmed cooperative relations between their countries and security conditions on the Korean Peninsula and other issues of mutual concern were discussed, the ministry added.
Suh plans to head to Budapest to participate in the second vice defense ministerial talks between South Korea and the Visegrad Group.
Visegrad, also known as V4, is a gathering of four Central European nations — the Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland and Slovakia.
