SEOUL, March 14 (Korea Bizwire) — The number of people who subscribed for new mobile phone discount fees surpassed the 10 million-mark in six months, the ICT ministry said Wednesday.
In September 2017, the discount rate of monthly mobile phone plans provided by the three telecom firms — SK Telecom Co., KT Corp. and LG Uplus Corp. — were raised from 20 percent to 25 percent.
A total of 10.06 million subscribers signed up for the new discount as of Monday, the ministry said.
The discount is normally offered to subscribers on two-year contract pay plans. Accordingly, a user with a monthly pay plan worth 40,000 won (US$36) can get an additional 2,000 won discount.
Mobile operators also began postponing cancellation charges for people who already subscribed to a previous plan starting this year, the ministry said.
The government’s decision to raise the discount rate was initially met with strong opposition from the mobile operators.
