SEOUL, Jul. 20 (Korea Bizwire) — With the temperatures continuing to rise nationwide, local governments are doing their best to keep their communities cool.
From automatic shades that spread open when sensors detect a rise in temperatures to special rooftop paint that reflects sunlight, everyone is chipping in to help lower the temperature by even just 1 degree Celsius.
In Daegu, one of the hottest regions in the country, various high-tech facilities helping citizens avoid the heat have been springing up throughout the city.
At Dongdaegu Station, one of the city’s landmarks, a smart shade has been installed near the plaza’s pedestrian crossings. The smart shade is equipped with a sensor that detects wind velocity, temperature and sunlight intensity.
When it is too hot or sunny, the shade automatically unfolds, providing shelter and relief to nearby pedestrians.
In addition, a cooling fog system that releases fog-like moisture at facilities near Dongdaegu Station and bus stops has also proved effective in cooling down pedestrians.
Meanwhile, the local government of Busan has been working on a “cool roof” project that involves applying special paint that reflects sunlight to the rooftops of 100 buildings.
The city is also applying the cooling paint to roads and sidewalk pavement in areas near Pusan National University.
In Seoul, the city government is lending out green parasols to citizens in the city’s more populated areas for free, while in Ulsan, around 1,870 portable water bottles will be distributed to the elderly and infirm by nurses.
