SEOUL, Aug. 8 (Korea Bizwire) — The number of single-bedroom share houses is increasing sharply in line with demand from the millennials, with many young South Koreans prioritizing independence from their parents.
According to a survey conducted by the house-sharing portal Come&Stay Co., the number of single-person rooms grew by about 83 percent compared to the second half of last year.
The number increased by 717 in the first half of this year alone.
This is related to the increase in the number of multiplex share houses.
Since 2016, the number of multiplex share houses with single bedrooms has exceeded the number of apartment-type share houses, with the number of single bedrooms rising significantly, maintaining a wide gap until now.
On the other hand, the number of rooms that can accommodate three to four guests increased by 18 percent compared to the same period last year, a more modest rise.
The growth rate of multi-person rooms with more than five people has been declining since 2017, and these types of rooms are now disappearing in the share-house industry.
In Seoul, where 85 percent of the share house market is concentrated, single-person rooms have also increased significantly.
Come&Stay explained that the number of multiplex and single bedroom types has increased significantly in the Seoul area since 2016.
“The millennial generation, born in the early 1980s and early 2000s, tends to prefer single rooms because they don’t have much experience sharing a room with their brothers or sisters,” said Kim Moon-young, CEO of Come&Stay.
