SEOUL, Oct. 14 (Korea Bizwire) — The Seoul Metropolitan Government (SMG) announced Saturday that it will create guidelines to improve the gender wage gap.
In the future, the city will reorganize the gender equality wage implementation guidelines of the Ministry of Gender Equality and Family to suit the city and develop self-diagnosis tables that can be utilized in the public and private sectors.
The measure is aimed at increasing the participation of investment-related agencies and private companies in Seoul.
In addition, an outline of the gender equality wage disclosure system will be introduced. The current status and analysis results of wage gaps by the SMG’s investment-related agencies will also be presented.
In March, the city announced a plan to promote gender equality in Seoul. The key factor was the gender equality wage disclosure system.
The main goal was to address the irrational wage gap between members of the opposite sex by making wages transparent.
Women’s opportunities for social participation have expanded over the past decade, but the gender wage gap has remained almost unchanged from 36.8 percent in 2008.
“With the introduction of the gender equality wage disclosure system for the first time in South Korea, it is necessary to develop ‘Seoul guidelines for gender equality wage practice’ that reflect the city’s characteristics to improve the gender wage gap,” a city official said.
