SEOUL, Nov. 11 (Korea Bizwire) — A certification rating system will be applied to air quality monitors to give consumers an idea of their relative performance.
The Ministry of Environment said Sunday that it has been issuing performance certification ratings for 38 simple air quality monitors at four government-affiliated organizations, including the Korea Environment Corporation, since July 8.
A simple air quality monitor is a device that detects fine dust with scattering light that is generated by emitting light into particles in the air and measures fine dust levels in real time, while some measuring devices are easy to carry and easy to use.
However, some have pointed out that due to external influences such as humidity, the results of measurement are less reliable and have not been approved under the “Act on Testing and Examination in the Environment,” leading to significant disparities in performance among measuring instruments.
To address such problems, the government decided in mid-August to implement a certification system for air quality monitors and will issue ratings to them through evaluations by certification bodies.
Certification authorities divided the measuring instruments into four grades: one to three or nonrated after evaluating the accuracy of the measurement results.
The device name and performance certification rating of the device evaluated can be found on the website of each certification authority.
The government will indicate these ratings on product packaging and provide the results of each evaluation item with QR codes so that consumers who purchase air quality monitors are aware of the rating.
