SEOUL, July 31 (Korea Bizwire) — A South Korean logistics firm had succeeded in transporting and shipping 28,000 tons of ultra-heavy plant equipment manufactured by a major energy company in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) through a Lego-like modular method.
Starting from November last year, CJ Logistics Corp. has been engaged in the transportation and shipment of semi-assembled plant equipment made at the Abu Dhabi-based National Petroleum Construction Company’s module processing plant from the factory to the barge.
Given that each piece of equipment had a weight of more than 1,000 tons, it was not easy to transport them from the factory to the barge although the distance was only about 5 kilometers.
CJ Logistics introduced a modular method to overcome the difficulties, which involved transporting semi-assembled equipment to the module processing factory where it was assembled like Lego blocks and shipped to the barge.
Using this method, the company succeeded in shipping 66 pieces of ultra-heavy plant equipment with their combined weight estimated to be similar to that of 4,600 African elephants.
CJ Logistics said it was especially difficult to transport two of the main decks for an offshore platform designed to exploit natural gas and oil, which had a weight of 1,047 tons each.
“We are expanding the coverage of our logistics business in the UAE where we have been engaged in the transportation of construction equipment with a combined weight of more than 1 million tons for the Barakah nuclear power project,” the company said.
