SEOUL, Sept. 9 (Korea Bizwire) — HMM Co., South Korea’s biggest shipping company by sales, has teamed up with Samsung Heavy Industries Co., a major shipyard, to conduct research on eco-friendly smart vessels.
The company announced on Tuesday that it had signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Samsung Heavy to carry out research on eco-friendly smart vessels.
Under terms of the MOU, the two parties will implement joint research by leveraging HMM’s container ships and Samsung Heavy’s smart ship solution SVESSEL, while promoting technological development in the eco-friendly smart ship area.
HMM will provide data and expertise it has long accumulated through vessel operations, while suggesting user needs and preferences to complement the smart ship solution.
At present, HMM employs state-of-the-art information technologies for twelve 24,000-TEU container ships it operates on European routes, as part of efforts to ensure operational timeliness, safety and efficiency.
In addition, HMM established the ‘Smart Ship Control Center’ that can check the safety of vessels in real time by tracking their cargo, route and position. The Smart Ship Control Center is scheduled to launch full-scale operations from mid-September.
