SEOUL, Oct. 16 (Korea Bizwire) — With next-generation unlicensed frequency set to come in 16 years, the speed of Wi-Fi will become five times faster than the present.
The Ministry of Science and ICT announced on Thursday that it will release the next-generation gigahertz (GHz) band (5,925 to 7,125 megahertz (MHz), 1.2 GHz bandwidth) frequency as an unlicensed mobile communication frequency.
The unlicensed frequency is an auxiliary 5G technology that is used for Wi-Fi and Internet of Things (IoT).
Unlike mobile carriers, which have to purchase frequency bands through bidding, ordinary citizens can make use of the unlicensed frequency band for Wi-Fi without paying.
The speed of existing WiFi that uses a 663.5 MHz frequency with a band of 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz is 400 to 600 megabits per second (Mbps).
The next-generation 6 GHz band frequency has a speed of 2.1 Gbps, about five times faster than existing Wi-Fi.
This will be the first time in 16 years that the country releases new Wi-Fi frequency. South Korea will become the second country in the world after the U.S. to release the 6 GHz band Wi-Fi.
