CHILGOK, Nov. 11 (Korea Bizwire) — Camp Carroll, an United States Forces Korea (USFK) base located in Chilgok County, North Gyeongsang Province, will soon see its 60-year-old barbed wire fence replaced with a new, less unsightly one.
The USFK accepted Chilgok County’s request to remove the circular barbed wire fences that harm the city landscape by replacing them with straight wire fences.
Camp Carroll was first built as part of the U.S. Army’s storage facility in May, 1959.
Removal of the circular wire, installed on top of a 2.5-meter wall, began on Tuesday.
A new straight wire fence will be installed across 9 kilometers of the outer wall by Nov. 20.
“I would like to thank Col. Edward J. Ballanco, commander of United States Army Garrison Daegu, for his efforts to make Chilgok County a better place,” said Baek Seon-Gi, mayor of Chilgok County.
