SEOUL, Dec. 2 (Korea Bizwire) — The state-run Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI) said Tuesday that it had developed wireless backhaul technology that supports 25-gigabits per second (Gbps) service.
Backhaul refers to the transmission network that connects the peripheral networks around base stations with backbone networks.
Wired backhauls that use fiber optic cables or copper lines are limited in that they require the use of cables. In addition, it is very time consuming and expensive to install them.
In contrast, wireless backhauls can transmit data at a low cost but ultra-high speed without the need to install equipment like fiber optic cables.
The ETRI-developed technology transmits data at a rate of up to 25 Gbps between a backbone network and an area within 1 kilometer of a base station in the bandwidth of 70 to 80 gigahertz.
This is higher than the maximum transmission capacity (20 Gbps) of the wireless backhaul for existing 5G mobile base stations.
This technology can be applied to mountainous and island areas that are difficult to reach by wired networks.
“Using this technology to complement wired backhauls should contribute to creating a more stable telecommunication environment even when problems occur with fire or other disasters.” said Lee Hoon, a senior researcher at ETRI.
