CHEORWON, Jan. 6 (Korea Bizwire) — Barbed wire fences that witnessed the brutality of the Korean War have been remade into statues of red-crowned cranes, a symbol of peace and longevity.
The border county of Cheorwon in Gangwon Province said Tuesday that crane statues made with fences collected from Arrowhead Hill during an excavation project to retrieve fallen heroes of the Korean War have been set up at the International Crane Center.
The statues were designed by Song Jin-su, a specialist in steel wire art, to express the yearning for peace with rusty wires and a depiction of red-crowned cranes.
Cranes are first-grade endangered species designated as natural monuments. They symbolize longevity and good fortune, and are known to never leave their mate.
