GWANGJU, Feb. 3 (Korea Bizwire) — South Korean researchers have developed new technology that enables users to verify whether a stent has become re-stenosed in a blood vessel via a smartphone.
A joint research team from Chonnam National University Hospital and Chonnam National University recently announced that they had developed the world’s first monitoring technology and registered a patent in South Korea.
The research team coated the stent’s V-shaped groove with a thin metallic film to ensure highly sensitive measurement of subtle vibration or the flow of fluid.
Compared to existing metallic strain sensors, the new technology can perform a measurement at about 30 times higher sensitivity.
This research, conducted on a biomimetic basis, is expected to clear the way for real-time disease management and monitoring.
In particular, the micro-sensor that can precisely measure the pressure within the blood vessel can send an alert to the patient’s smartphone or hospital once the stent is re-stenosed or a blood clot is generated.
