SEOUL, June 2 (Korea Bizwire) — The UNESCO world heritage site Hahoe Folk Village in Andong, 270 kilometers southeast of Seoul, will prohibit village tours onboard golf cart-like vehicles.
The Cultural Heritage Administration (CHA), jointly with the city of Andong, announced that it will set up fences to block the entry of tour carts, and strengthen patrols around the world heritage site.
Hahoe Folk Village, also listed as a national heritage, attracts more than 1 million visitors each year.
A series of accidents caused by tour carts, however, began to raise concerns that they may undermine the village’s ‘universal value’ as a world heritage.
“Even with the fences installed, visitors can still tour the village on bicycles. We also aim to offer various convenience facilities to allow visitors to tour the village on foot,” the CHA said.
