SEOUL, June 8 (Korea Bizwire)SK Telecom Co. is set to launch decentralized identifier (DID) service that uses blockchain technology to uniquely identify buildings as well as to diagnose the safety of dangerous structures.

DID is a term used to describe an online-based electronic identification system that uses blockchain technology to manage the certificate of identification.

Thus far, it has been used mainly for personal identification. The South Korea’s largest mobile carrier became the first entity in the country to use it to identify things.

The service will be used in a trial project for diagnosing the safety of dangerous structures. The trial project will be carried out jointly by the Jungrang District Office in Seoul and a consortium consisting of a handful of domestic companies.

SK Telecom will offer its blockchain-based mobile electronic certification service ‘Initial’ to the consortium, while being responsible for monitoring the inclination and cracks of aged buildings using its IoT technologies.

Initial DID technology is safe from forgery and alteration risk when collecting or sending data since it can assign intrinsic DID to various Internet-of-Things (IoT) devices. It also makes it easier to identify original data.
