SEOUL, June 11 (Korea Bizwire) — South Korea’s overseas aid agency will begin supporting farmers in Guatemala’s western highlands that suffer from periodic drought and rain storms.
The Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) and the U.N. Green Climate Fund (GCF) have established plans for 11 projects on climate change and environmental protection and delivered them to 11 farmers’ cooperatives.
The two agencies plan to support 52 farmers’ cooperatives by 2025, investing as much as US$45,000 in each project.
Projects on forest restoration, the protection of water resources, agricultural education on climate change, and soil recovery have been carried out by the two agencies since 2019.
KOICA expects that the new initiative will not only improve the lives of some 15,000 farmers, but help restore the natural ecosystem by rebuilding forests and recovering water resources.
