SEOUL, Jan. 28 (Korea Bizwire) — The Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs said Thursday that it will expand the coverage of the pet cat registration pilot program across the country starting from February.
The ministry has implemented the pilot program for some municipal districts since 2018. Unlike the registration system for pet dogs, the pet cat registration program is based on cat owners’ voluntary participation.
The owners of pet dogs older than two months of age are obliged to register their pet at city, county or district offices. However, the owners of pet cats can register any time they want.
Pet cats can only be registered with embedded trackers, in which a rice-sized radio frequency identification (RFID) chip is inserted into the nape of the cat’s neck at veterinary clinics designated as animal registration agencies by municipal governments.
The method of putting an RFID chip-mounted collar on the cat is prohibited since it can be easily damaged given the behavioral characteristics of cats.
