GYEONGJU, Feb. 7 (Korea Bizwire) — Growing subtropical fruits is gaining popularity in Gyeongju, 371 kilometers southeast of Seoul famous for its fertile land and ample sunlight.
A leading region for tomato farming, the city has begun growing tangerines, fruits that used to grow in the southern regions, since the early 2010s.
Now, the tangerines are grown in greenhouses, run by 24 farms, across 9.5 hectares of land, adding two additional hectares since last year.
Melon farming, which began at four farms in 2003, has also expanded to 77 farms.
They are grown during the off-season for tomatoes, adding to the farmers’ annual profits.
The city government and farmers are currently testing new “apple mango” farms, with the first harvest expected for 2024.
