SEOUL, April 1 (Korea Bizwire)The Ministry of the Interior and Safety said Thursday it will carry out a five-year plan to establish liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) distribution facilities for 31 islands and 4,200 households across the country.

With a budget of 45.4 billion won (US$37.3 million), the project is aimed at installing storage tanks on each island to enable them to store and use LPG for more than a month, as well as establishing a constant supply system by installing a pipeline network connecting individual households.

To prevent accidents, a gas timer and a timer cock (a device to automatically shut off the gas supply when the set time is reached) will be installed in each household.

Remote island areas where city gas is not supplied had no option but to use LPG as a fuel for heating, but there were many cases in which they had difficulty securing fuel due to a shortage of storage tanks.

With islands relying on supply by ships, there were even cases where heating and cooking were not possible for several days due to bad weather resulting in the suspension of ship operations.
