SEOUL, Oct. 22 (Korea Bizwire) – Samsung Heavy Industries said on October 21 that it has developed a robot that can clean the bottom water-immersed part of the ship. As the new robot can replace the expensive re-docking job performed before delivering the ship to the client, it is expected to save a lot of cost for the company.
Typically it takes seven to eight months to build a liquefied natural gas carrier during which marine organisms such as barnacles attach to the ship’s hull, which becomes a factor to slow down the ship’s speed.
The newly developed robot will do away with the need for a week of re-docking for cleaning purposes as the robot can do the job with the ship berthed. The company has already completed the pilot test of the robot and will begin using the robot from November this year for ships ready for delivery.
