SEOUL, Aug. 3 (Korea Bizwire) — POSCO Engineering & Construction Co., the construction arm of South Korea’s leading steelmaker, POSCO, said Tuesday it has developed an eco-friendly concrete mold made with plastic scraps and slag.
The mold was created jointly with Iomtek, a POSCO E&C subsidiary, and comes in the shape of a board that combines melted plastic scraps with slag, a primary byproduct of the steelmaking process.
These molds are lighter than conventional wood-based molds, ensuring better safety when they are moved or installed. They are also twice as durable.
POSCO E&C also used POSCO magnesium alloy coating (PosMAC), a corrosion-resistant steel product designed by its parent company, for the mold’s frame in order to enhance durability.
“Wood-based molds are detrimental to forests and scrapping them also poses an additional risk to the environment. The new mold, however, can be recycled simply by melting it down,” POSCO E&C said.
The company is currently testing the mold at a local expressway construction site, with plans to set up a mass production system in preparation for external sales.
