SEOUL, Sept. 13 (Korea Bizwire) — The mosquito population in the greater Seoul area has dropped significantly following the series of heavy showers last month.
The Seoul Metropolitan Government collected 55,677 mosquitoes in August through a digital mosquito monitoring system set up in 25 districts, which was 35.8 percent fewer than last year.
The number of mosquitoes set a new low record for August since the system was introduced in 2015.
The plunge is assumed to be the result of the torrential rain that hit Seoul in early August, during which water puddles, an ideal environment for mosquitoes to breed, might have been washed away by the showers.
Mosquitoes, however, have become a severe problem in Seoul in September rather than in August for the last couple of years.
Mosquitoes are most active at temperatures between 24 and 27 degrees Celsius. If the temperature exceeds 32 degrees, mosquitoes face shorter lifespans and less activity.
