SEOUL, Nov. 3 (Korea Bizwire)South Korea’s retail industry is releasing a string of small-sized food products targeting consumers who eat smaller amounts of food after dividing larger dishes into smaller portions.

Convenience store chain GS25 released two different types of “cup bap,” or cup rice, a quick and cheap meal served in a cup, that are reduced in size and price by half compared to existing products.

Each product has a weight of about 200 grams, less than half of existing packaged lunch products, with their price set at 2,300 won (US$1.61), a level similar to the price of one roll of “gimbap,” or seaweed rice rolls with vegetables.

The development of the newly-released products was led by GS25’s younger employees in their 20s and 30s after the trend of eating small meals recently went viral on YouTube.

Another convenience store chain, 7-Eleven, also released a small quantity version of Cetaphil moisturizing lotion and cream to cope with cold temperatures and dry weather.

The volume of the lotion and cream is estimated at 237ml and 85 grams, respectively, roughly 25 percent of the size of existing products.

According to 7-Eleven, sales of moisturizing creams rose by 25 percent in October compared to a month earlier. In dense business districts, sales of creams jumped by more than 40 percent.
