SEOUL, Dec. 14 (Korea Bizwire) — South Koreans are growing frustrated with the rapidly increasing cost of heating their homes.
Home heating costs jumped from 65.23 won per Mcal in March to 89.88 won last month, an increase of 37.8 percent in just eight months, according to the state-run Korea District Heating Corp.
Citizens are resorting to various means to reduce the cost of heating.
Kim Yu-lim, a 28-year-old office worker, covered windows with bubble wrap, which is known to be effective in terms of insulation.
“I’ve never used bubble wrap before since it doesn’t really look that nice. This year, though, I got scared of turning on the boiler, and decided to give it a try,” Kim said.
Jin, a 32-year-old office worker who gave only his last name, turned off the heat for his and his wife’s room, leaving his 2-year-old son’s room as the only heated room in the house.
“I don’t even think about turning on the heat in the living room. I turn on the heat just to get rid of the cold air,” Jin said.
