SEOUL, April 12 (Korea Bizwire) — Rising consumer prices have led to the rising popularity of “ugly” fishery products, attracting consumers with their competitive pricing.
SSG.com, the online mall arm of South Korean retail giant Shinsegae Group, introduced “ugly” fishery products like South Korean squid and Argentinian shrimp at the newly opened misfits market for the first time.
The “ugly” squid and shrimp are those with scratches or damage during the course of capture or processing. The company is bringing them together to sell them at a cheaper price.
Another online shopping mall 11Street Co. has also begun selling small, skin-torn “ugly” cutlassfish and mackerel, as well as meal kits that use them as ingredients.
Local livestock logistics startup The Pirates is selling frozen crab with damaged legs at a discount rate of up to 88 percent.
