CHANGNYEONG, April 24 (Korea Bizwire) — The Ministry of Environment has selected Upo Wetland in Changnyeong County, South Gyeongsang Province as an eco-tourist zone for the fourth consecutive time, the county office said Sunday.
Since 2013, the ministry has been selecting eco-tourist zones with the aim of preserving areas with unique ecosystems and landscapes, as well as achieving a virtuous cycle of raising the local community’s quality of life.
Upo Wetland was first selected as an eco-tourist zone in 2013, and subsequently in 2017, 2020, and this year.
Upo Wetland is South Korea’s largest inland wetland, located in the Nakdong River system.
Its exceptional natural environment and biodiversity have helped to restore the country’s only habitat for the crested ibis.
The ministry supports the development of eco-tourism programs and local businesses in selected eco-tourist zones.
