SEOUL, May 21 (Korea Bizwire) — Seoul’s public bicycle service “Ddareungi” has reached over 100 million rides and 4,000 rides since its launch in December 2015. The number of users has steadily increased, with 40.95 million rides in the previous year, signifying significant growth compared to the first year.
The cumulative distance traveled is 387 million kilometers, which is equivalent to about 510 round trips to the moon. The share of fixed-demand commuter passes has increased over the past three years. Gangseo, Songpa and Yeongdeungpo are the districts with the highest usage. The top rental locations during rush hour and off-peak hours are near major stations and business districts.
The demand for rental stations around the Han River Bikeway is high during weekends. The number of foreigners using bicycles in the public bike system increased by 167 percent in 2022.
The service began with 44 rental stations and 440 bicycles and has since expanded to 150 rental stations and 2,000 bicycles in five locations. The service helps alleviate traffic congestion and reduce greenhouse gases.
