SEOUL, June 21 (Korea Bizwire) — The overseas aid agency Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) said Tuesday it will launch the construction of a pilot cultivation complex for the development of native vegetable seeds in Uganda as part of efforts to help boost the income of local farmers.
The test cultivation complex will be constructed in four different areas, covering a total floor space of 3.8 hectares.
Each cultivation complex will be equipped with various facilities, such as greenhouses, water tanks, underground wells, and distribution infrastructure.
A total of 33 Korean-made greenhouses, each measuring 25 meters by 7 meters, will be installed.
Once the construction is finished, which is expected to take approximately one year, each cultivation complex will produce a minimum of one or more native Ugandan seeds for five different types of vegetables, including tomatoes, onions, cabbage, chili peppers, and nakati.
This initiative is part of KOICA’s Uganda Key Vegetable Crop Seed Value Chain Project, which aims to invest a total of US$8 million between 2021 and 2029.
