GWANGJU, Aug. 3 (Korea Bizwire) — A joint research team from the Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology and Chonnam National University Hospital announced on Wednesday the development of a new patch that can treat myocardial infarction by applying gel to the heart.
The myocardial patch provides physical support to the heartbeat, preventing the thinning of the ventricular wall and ventricle enlargement.
However, it may cause side effects, such as bleeding or inflammation reactions, due to the use of surgical stitching or medical staples for patch fixation.
The newly-developed patch securely attaches to the external heart wall while restoring electrical vitality in myocardial tissues, thanks to its high electrical conductivity.
Compared to the current medical use of biological adhesive fibrin glue, the new patch exhibits approximately 10 times higher adhesion when treating heart issues.
