SEOUL, Aug. 21 (Korea Bizwire) — The annual Ulchi civil defense exercise, running for four days, has commenced nationwide alongside a joint military exercise between South Korea and the US.
About 580,000 officials from various levels of government and public institutions are participating to enhance their preparedness for war and contingencies.
Originating in 1969 after a North Korean raid, this year’s exercise focuses on responding to evolving North Korean threats, including nuclear, drone, cyber, and “gray-zone” provocations.
The exercise involves civil servant call-ups, wartime administrative transition, anti-terror drills, and civilian-targeted training, including cyber threats. A nationwide anti-air raid drill is set for Wednesday at 2 p.m., featuring civil evacuation training and traffic restrictions.
